What to Eat While Taking Wegovy (Diet Plan)

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly prescription injection that helps people lose weight. It works by reducing the appetite and increasing feelings of fullness.

While taking Wegovy, it’s important to follow a healthy diet plan to support weight loss efforts. But what’s the best diet plan when you’re taking Wegovy? Should you reduce calories, follow a keto diet, or do intermittent fasting?

Let’s talk about it in this blog post.

Disclaimer: This is my expert opinion as a registered dietitian and doctor in clinical nutrition. I based my opinion on extensive research and experience working with patients taking weight loss medications

Best Diet Plan While on Wegovy

The truth is that there is no single “best diet” to follow while taking Wegovy. But eating a balanced, nutritious assortment of food is important to support weight loss while taking the medication.

Well balanced diet

The two main goals for the diet should be:

  1. To support weight loss
  2. To create habits to maintain the weight loss long-term

No doubt, this weekly injection makes eating less much easier. It works for weight loss by reducing appetite. However, if you’re not careful with what you eat, you can still consume more calories than you need. Don’t let this be the downfall of your weight loss journey.

The main goal of a diet plan is to reduce calories.

How Many Calories do You Need?

The main recommendation is to follow a reduced-calorie diet. The exact number of calories you need depends on your age, sex, weight, height, and physical activity level.

However, this can be accomplished in several ways. But first, let’s figure out how many calories YOU need.

Calories

Dietitians often use equations like the Mifflin St Jeor to calculate needs. This calculator will identify the numbers you need, all you need is to input your information.

Then you subtract 500 per day to promote weight loss.

How to Follow a Reduced-Calorie Diet Plan

Use a Weight Loss App

To make your task easier and to keep track of your calories, you can use an app like MyFitnessPal, Lose It, or Chronometer. These apps are available in Google Play and Apple Stores. Any of these will calculate your calorie needs and enable you to keep track of how much you’re eating.

Follow a Meal Plan

You can also follow a meal program that takes your nutritional needs into consideration. A registered dietitian (nutritionist) can help you design the best plan for you.

Intermittent Fasting

Don’t want to count calories but don’t want to fall off the wagon with your diet? Intermittent fasting (IF) may be the ideal solution for you.

Intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting, or time-restricted eating, is a pattern of eating where you restrict yourself to consuming food only during certain hours of the day.

For instance, in IF 16:8, you fast for 16 hours and eat all your meals during an 8-hour window.

Intermittent fasting works because it decreases the overall number of calories you consume if you don’t abuse your eating windows.

Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is an eating pattern inspired by traditional ways of eating in countries around the Mediterranean Sea.

This diet is based on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It includes healthy fats like olive oil and limited amounts of red meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, and yogurt.

It’s a delicious way to eat healthily while also enjoying all kinds of dishes.

This diet works because it helps you make healthy food choices, and because it’s tasty and non-restrictive, it’s easy to stick to it.

Mediterranean diet

It’s easy to fit this type of diet into your day when you’re having Wegovy.

Other Helpful Tips

  1. Portion control is likely not to be an issue while taking the medication.
  2. Practice mindful eating: Pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues and avoid distractions such as the television or phone while eating.
  3. Plan ahead: Plan meals and snacks ahead of time to ensure that healthy options are always available and to avoid impulsive food choices.

Physical Activity

While exercise is not essential for weight loss while on Wegovy, physical activity should still be a part of your daily routine.

Women outdoor exercising

Not only will keeping active help you maintain good health by strengthening muscles, bones, and heart, but it will also increase your energy levels, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.

Exercise will help you change your body composition, lose weight, and keep the weight off.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity most days of the week.

My Expert Opinion

Wegovy is an effective weight loss medication that works by reducing hunger and appetite. However, after you stop taking it, it’s very likely that you will regain the weight UNLESS you change your habits.

A healthy diet is important for maximizing the weight loss benefits of Wegovy. However, it’s essential for what happens after you stop taking it.

Of course, you could take the medication for the rest of your life to keep the weight off, but is that what you want?

With a commitment to healthy eating and lifestyle habits, you can accomplish long-term weight loss and improve your overall quality of life.

  1. This is my third month on the shot. I went up to 40mg thinking that would help lose more weight, but I have plateaued. I am still eating healthy and I am not sure how to get the weight to move. I have been stuck on 226 since 2/21. Any help would be appreciated.

  2. You continually suggest salmon as one of the lean options. I detest salmon. Realistically, what other types of fish do you suggest. I like Lake Michigan White Fish, Tuna, occasionally walleye or local lake fish.

  3. Nsidem Francis

I’m having serious problems with what to eat because i easily have constipation once i eat any small thing. i need help with diet plan.

  4. I would love to have a weekly food menu. I’m having a hard time with what foods will help me lose weight and be healthy!

  5. I am just starting this weight management drug and am concerned about getting enough nutrients. I currently do IF and only eat dinner. I know that that will not work with this drug as I cant eat big portions like I have been doing. What to you recommend. Also would like a sample menu plan.

  6. Month 5. I have lost 22lbs. I do not eat near as much as I used to. I try to consume around 1200 calories per day. I noticed that bread and starches really make me nauseated and constipated.

    1. Peanut butter can create a more satisfying smoothie. If you are eating enough throughout the day, keep your portion size small (1 Tablespoon) to keep your calories under control. If you are not eating enough, then feel free to make it 2 Tablespoons.

  7. I am just starting Wegovy and with the potential for major health problems is a scare for me. I know this is more so what to eat but when I’m ready I want to be completely comfortable to start. I’m mentally ready but want to make sure I’m safe and eating accordingly for my blood sugar not to bottom out. I have always gotten “sick” if I don’t eat in the mornings or wait too long in the evenings. I get headaches if I don’t eat but I’m sure that’s my body not getting the normal crap! Also, injection sites are stomach, arm and thigh but for someone new who’s never done this on their own where exactly in these areas do I inject? sorry for all the questions

    1. Hi Michelle, you can keep eating at the times that work best for you. Most likely, what will happen is that you will start eating smaller portions. You can also keep healthy snacks in your purse to eat if you start not feeling great. Please make sure you mention this to the healthcare provider that is prescribing your Wegovy. They can also explain exactly where to inject and what are the signs of a hypoglycemic episode (low blood sugar). I hope this answer helps!

  8. I would be very interested in that sample menu! I am into my second month on Wegovy but weight loss was only five pounds the first four weeks. My food intake is less than half with no carbs. I do have a problem with needed water and exercise. I have Congestive Heart Failure so walking or exercise is not an option as my breathing is deeply affected. I believe losing weight might help but I am getting very discouraged with only five pounds loss in four weeks. My Cardiologist and Family Physician insists that I walk but the distance is very short. Thank you!

    1. I will have the sample meal plan ready very soon 🙂 However, I also recommend for you to seek the help of a Registered Dietitian to personalize your diet according to your needs. I am thinking low sodium too. Walking according to your physicans’ instructions is a great idea too. It can speed up the weight loss process and make you healthier too.

  9. I’m finding it very difficult to consume enough food. My usual calorie count is about 800 calories. When I feel hungry even over hungry and try to eat I can eat two or three bites and I have to be done. . I’ve been looking for a sample menu of what other people are doing. is anyone else having the same problem? I’m feeling like I need higher Quality nutrition in a small quantity of food. Can you post a sample daily menu that might answer this question? what is spectacular to me about this drug is that my sure cravings are completely gone. I have no interest in a brownie or ice cream which have always been my major downfall.

    1. Hello Bev, that is a common issue. I am actually working on a sample menu as it is one of the common concerns my clients have. I will let you know when the blog post is up.
